Practical German Witchcraft

Saturday, October 26, 2024

9:00 AM-11:00 PM PDT | 12:00 PM -2:00 PM EDT

Germany and the German speaking cultures have a long history of magic. While this may not always have been called witchcraft, we find a lot in these practices that a Witch would recognize. Hidden in ancient church documents, collections of folklore, fairy tales, local customs, and many other places, there is truly a rich magical current to draw upon.

Much of this magical current can be adapted into the practice of a modern Witch, honoring this rich heritage while also making the magic relevant for us today.

Join Moss Matthey, author of An Apostate’s Guide to Witchcraft, to explore some of the charms and magical techniques found in the cultures of the German speaking world, as well as how we can carry them into the modern day, including:

  • Creating a fossil/crystal ward
  • Creating your own Himmelsbrief charm
  • Trying out a form of German pendulum divination

Materials Needed:

Fossil/Crystal ward:

  • A fossil, preferably an ammonite, or if not possible; a crystal, preferably quartz.
  • A pouch or jar.
  • 3 herbs that represent the virtue of protection to you. I will be using nettle, rosemary, and elderflower.

Himmelsbrief:

  • pen and paper

German Pendulum Divination:

  • A needle and thread
  • A piece of bread
  • A piece of coal, or, if not possible, a black stone or pebble.

Work with the spirit medicine of the Elder Tree to prepare for moving into the dark half of the year. With Samhain as the doorway, we step into the infinite potential of the dark season, turning inward and dreaming into being what we wish for the following year

Through their powerful qualities as a crone tree. You will learn about the physical medicine and how to work with it to protect your body at this transition  in the wheel of the year. Connect in ceremony and learn a simple yet profound technique  to really listen to the language and wisdom of our herbal plant guides.

As we pause and reflect at this time of year, we consider what no longer serves us. Elder assists in seeing ourselves clearly - as we are now and who we are in our soul-aligned space. You will craft a magical Elder herbal pouch to work with throughout the dark months to support your winter reflections and transformation.

Witch Folklore of the Global South

Sunday, October 27, 2024

9:00 AM-11:00 AM PDT | 12:00 PM-2:00 PM EDT

Witchcraft has historical roots in folk practices across the world, most of which were strictly occulted, passed down orally and protected for centuries through cultural lines. As witchcraft has shed the stigma of the past, modern witches increasingly ground their practices in ancient folk magic and draw inspiration from legendary witches. Much of the folkloric cannon today hails from Euro-pagan traditions, as they're the most consistently documented, but the histories of witchcraft extend beyond the western witch, reaching to all corners of the world.

In this talk, we'll romp through a survey of witch lore and folk legends of the Global South, including Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Aboriginal Australia. We'll explore important historical witches and their practices, and we'll trace how culturally specific lore has been appropriated or left out by modern witchcraft. You'll get a well-rounded overview of global witch folklore, and there will be time to share your own cultural stories of the witch.

Materials needed:

Participants are encouraged to bring a witch folk story from their own childhood (including things like a folk tale, a family story, a fictional story they were told at bedtime, or even a TV witch) and a pen and paper - Lorraine will show you how to transform these stories into empowerment spells via a writing exercise.
